I wanted to touch on the subject of fashion today. It’s not something I usually write about… But I have gotten a lot of inquiries from fashion brands, readers requesting that I write about fashion, and invites to NY Fashion Week the past two seasons… So I think it’s time!
I used to be a stylist, and yet somehow, I still mostly feel like I don’t have the authority to write about fashion. I don’t really live in that “world” anymore. But I am a creative at heart and absolutely love designing outfits that are special and push boundaries.
As a rule, I am NOT about fast-fashion. I am someone who really focuses on quality investment pieces. So, living in OKC, there’s just not a lot going on fashion-wise. ZERO places to shop. There aren’t a ton of reasons to dress up. Plus working from home, 9 times out of 10 I am in a slouchy oversized sweatshirt and Ugg slippers. Not exactly glam. I don’t run into models walking past me the way I did when I lived in New York and Dallas.
That said, what I LOVE and appreciate about fashion is more where it intersects with art and how it can make you FEEL. Being away from the intense & competitive fashion world for a while has really helped me gain that perspective. In my life, fashion is an expression. It’s a way to speak to the world without uttering a word.
I will never be one of those bloggers who dresses just like every other blogger. Who’s entire closet comes from Target and Nordstrom. My looks will always be off-the-wall and a half step towards crazy. Many of my pieces are vintage or consignment and literally can’t be purchased by a reader through a commission link. I like pieces with personality because I wear what I wear to tell you about who I am.
Disclaimer though, I am not hating! A lot of my favorite bloggers focus on fashion, use commission links, and love Nordstrom. They make money off their style because they’re darling. I am just putting it out there that that’s not super me, it’s just not where I am headed. I am more interested in pushing boundaries and dreaming outside the box; being a little more creative, a little less mainstream.
For every one of you who likes my style or has been inspired by it, there are probably TEN who think it’s WEIRD. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think I maybe enjoy irking people a bit when the vibe is right.
I will continue to create & post outfits that hopefully you find interesting/ inspiring for your own wardrobe and start to write a little about them to go with the IG moments. And if you are interested in hearing more about my take on fashion, let me know what you want to hear! I was thinking along the lines of “How to Keep Professional Attire Interesting”? Thoughts?!
