I wanted to share a recipe with y’all that is truly LIFE CHANGING. Well, it’s more of a road map that can be modified endlessly but a great place to start. If that makes any sense.
I have made smoothies for a long time… I think since college? But once I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis, I focused in on them a LOT more because they were liquid (soft or liquid is pretty much the only requirement for GP) but could still get me all of the nutrients I needed. Eventually, I kinda honed in on the one smoothie that was my foundation for everything and I would just kinda modify that one from day to day. And the best part – I can keep all of the ingredients for this smoothie on hand at all times because they are either frozen ingredients OR non-perishable so I can really stock up on them and not worry that they’ll go bad!
For a while, I figured everyone kinda knew this recipe so I didn’t share much about it. But then I shared it with three people in my family who came back to me FREAKING OUT. They loved the way the smoothie tasted, made them feel, and it helped all of them lose weight and improve their digestion.
So first, I sent this recipe along with a small Ninja blender to my sister Rosie, she loved it. Started making smoothies when she was training for a half marathon and still makes them today. I used to BEG Deven to drink a smoothie in the mornings. When he started getting serious about losing weight for the wedding, he finally agreed to try them for one week. HE LOST 7 LBS THAT WEEK. He truly was mind-blown and I came down that weekend to find him making one on his own for himself – ON A SATURDAY MORNING! We usually cheat a little on weekend mornings (can you say DONUTS?!) so this made me SUPER excited. He genuinely liked them and what’s more is that he said he “likes the way they make him feel.” I swear, he’s a try dude’s dude and would not say that lightly!
So then, I told my mom about this. She went and bought a Ninja. Asked for my recipe. She now makes them EVERY SINGLE MORNING! She said she could eat them for dessert they’re so delicious!!! What’s crazy too, nearly every ingredient in it is a superfood. They will make your skin glow, hair/nails grow, and make you feel your absolute best, keeping your digestion & energy levels on track.
So after my mom stopped me when I was in town, just to RAVE about the smoothies and how they’ve helped her digestion, I decided I shouldn’t keep this recipe to myself! It might end up helping a few of you as well. HERE GOES! If you make it, pleaseee tell me or tag me on social media!! I would love to know it reached some of you.
MY SUPERFOOD SMOOTHIE:
First thing’s first, you’ll need a blender. I recommend this one (linked here) because it is the PERFECT one serving size. After I’m done, I always rinse it immediately (if you let the smoothie remnants dry, it can be tough to get them off) and it’s ready to go for the next day! It also fits perfectly in a dishwasher as opposed to larger blenders.
The foundation:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 big handful of spinach
- 1 big handful of blueberries
- 1 scoop of Vital Protiens collagen powder
- 1 tsp ground flax seeds
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- Fill up halfway with almond milk
OPTIONAL:
- Protein powder of choice
- Cocoa nibs or powder
- Scoop of peanut butter
*NOTE: if you’re a big breakfast person and don’t want to miss your usual fix, you can always make this recipe in the morning and keep it in the fridge for dinner OR have your favorite breakfast for dinner instead!
I know I know, that was a TON of build up for such a simple recipe, right? But you can keep the bananas, spinach, and blueberries all in the freezer then add in the supplements that you just keep on hand. It’s easy and also makes a great back up dinner.
NOW, a different way of doing this (if you follow my insta stories, you see this regularly) is “NICE CREAM.” The reason it’s called nice cream is that it’s nice to the animals (vegan) and nice for your gut 😉 It legit tastes like icecream and yet you can have it for dinner and it’s basically a 300 calorie salad. I think this is how humans are supposed to eat. You’re welcome.
NICE CREAM RECIPE:
- 2 frozen bananas* MUST BE FROZEN
- Splash of vanilla
- Small handful of spinach
- 1 TSP ground flax seed
- Splash of almond milk
Optional add ons:
- Peanut butter
- Chia seeds
- Collagen powder
I then blend it all up until thick but smooth. Put in bowl, drizzle with thin peanut butter or sprinkle with dark cocoa nibbs. Again, you’re welcome!
I also keep all my supplements in air tight containers so they’re super organized and stay fresh. Here are the ones I use (linked here!) are only $10.
I make either of these recipes MULTIPLE times a week or even day. While some of the ingredients are pricey, bananas are the main foundation and they are SO cheap. If you need to forgo some of the supplements or ingredients, totally fine! Some cheaper ingredients you can swap out for that are also AMAZING (taste AND health wise) are beets, buy a can, drain, and freeze these babies too! I just toss one whole beet into the blender with the other ingredients.
In the summer, I will add more fruity flavors like pineapple or peach. I love adding in a juice or water instead of the almond milk when the flavors lean more tart. This recipe is endlessly customizable but if you learn the basic version well, you can have a lot of fun playing with it!
Again, please let me know if you make this recipe – it would make my day!
